#23 ¿Que pasó? with Señor B - week of 9/1

A critique of Kristi Noem's false claims about Los Angeles, a new California law that would require schools to notify families about ICE presence, a look at the controversial plan to use military judges for immigration cases, and finally, a summary of Illinois Governor Pritzker's warnings about federal intervention in Chicago.

Hola familia,

We had very heavy week with several landmark moments. I know in moments like this we can become desensitized to what is happening. I hope we all can take a moment to remind each other that what we are experiencing is not normal. Please take care of yourselves and check up on your homies.

As usual thank you all for your support in my own journey of wanting to have an impact in support of our communities.

They Are Lying About Los Angeles

This week, Kristi Noem appeared on the news and made some remarkable claims about Los Angeles, painting a picture of a city overrun by chaos and saved only by the intervention of the National Guard. She spoke of widespread riots and looting as if they were the city’s natural state, completely ignoring the facts on the ground.

But for those who were actually there, the reality tells a very different story. Los Angeles was largely peaceful before the National Guard's presence. In a twist of logic, their deployment, alongside the presence of ICE at peaceful protests, actually served as a catalyst for violence that otherwise wouldn't have occurred. Their intervention did more harm than good, and the supposed "saving" of the city was a narrative created to justify an action that was unnecessary and counterproductive.

This is a powerful example of a disturbing trend: the rewriting of history to fit a political agenda. The events in Los Angeles weren't a spontaneous eruption of disorder; they were a response to a situation that was inflamed by the very forces meant to control it. The distortion of these events is a calculated effort to create a false reality and to obscure the truth of what happened. It's a reminder that we must always be critical of the stories we're told and seek out the reality behind the rhetoric.

Elected Official Throws Tantrum

A bizarre story this week came out of a older gentlemen who claimed to be a elected official throwing a tantrum at a Mexican restaurant.

It all began after he fell off a chair after simply seating on his own. There was nothing wrong with the chair or the floor. After falling he broke the door of the restaurant and began throwing insults at the workers. At some point he even claimed that he was going to call immigration on them.

Unfortunately we are going to continue to see more folks show their true colors since this administration is encouraging this.

I am glad this exists so we can give him the attention he deserves.

Keeping Our Families SAFE in California

This is huge, California has taken a big step to protect our families and make sure our kids can feel safe at school. A new bill, known as the SAFE Act, has been passed by the legislature and is on its way to the Governor’s desk.

The new law will require K-12 schools, community colleges, and universities to notify students, families, and staff if and when federal immigration enforcement agents are on campus. The idea is to make sure families know what is happening so they can protect themselves. This is exactly what we need right now; a clear, official alert system to help our communities feel more secure.

The bill, along with a related measure (AB 49), is a direct response to the current administration’s aggressive immigration policies that have cast a shadow of fear over our schools. This legislation sends a clear message: schools are sanctuaries, and we are not going to stand by while our families are targeted. In a time when fear is being used as a political tool, a law like this is a powerful and necessary way to help people feel a sense of safety and control. It’s a huge win for everyone who believes a classroom should be a place for learning, not for living in fear.

I think it’s a good response to the horrors we are witnessing #breakingnews #california #lamigra #immigration #inmigracion

Military Judges as Immigration Judges?

The current administration has made it clear that they are prioritizing speed over due process, and we are now seeing the results of that in a truly frightening way. In a deeply concerning move, the Defense Secretary has approved a proposal to send up to 600 military lawyers to serve as temporary immigration judges.

This is a terrible idea for so many reasons. Not only are these military lawyers expected to take on a completely new role with potentially as little as two weeks of preparation, but this action also completely undermines the integrity of our justice system. Immigration law is incredibly complex, and a person's life and future can depend on a fair and thorough hearing. Expecting lawyers with no background in this area to make life-altering decisions is a direct threat to due process.

This move is a dangerous shortcut that politicizes the military and doubles down on the administration’s strategy of using fear and force instead of building a just and functioning legal system. Our country deserves better, and the people seeking refuge and a fair hearing deserve so much more than a fast-tracked process that compromises their basic rights.

Spooky in my opinion #inmigracion #military #lawyers #inmigration #breakingnews

Trumps Plans for Chicago and Beyond

In a truly alarming development, the Governor of Illinois, J.B. Pritzker, has come out to reveal the administration's latest plan: a federal intervention in Chicago and other "blue cities." This is not about fighting crime or keeping people safe. It's a political tactic, and we're seeing it unfold in real time.

According to the governor, the administration plans to send masked federal agents into the city to pick up people under the pretense of them being dangerous criminals. This is a terrifying echo of what we've seen in other cities and a complete disregard for due process. But it gets worse. This supposed crackdown is also aimed at disrupting celebrations, with the governor specifically citing a concern that federal agents are being deployed in September to target Mexican Independence Day and other Hispanic heritage events. A popular local festival has already been canceled as a result.

This is a reminder that we are witnessing the wrong side of history. This is not about public safety; it's about sowing fear, undermining local government, and using our communities as political props. Governor Pritzker and other leaders are standing up to fight this, but it's on all of us to recognize what's happening and speak out against this dangerous agenda.

@senor_barragan

This isn’t about legality or criminals, it’s about who is welcome and who isn’t #chicago #breakingnews #immigration #california

Personal Update:

This week for selfcare I wanted to get back to writing. I love writing poetry but lately I have had a hard time trying to focus and give myself time to do it. The piece below is what came out! I think it really speaks to how folks with my immigration status are feeling lately. Its a bit on the darker side but that wasn’t on purpose lol if it resonates with you…. let me know!

Where will they bury me?

Will my loved ones send me home?

Back to the soil that gave me birth?

A post mortem deportation to finally free me from this self inflicted exile

To be buried along side my ancestors

Mis abuelitas me esperan

Mi abuelo I never met

My uncle's I never talked to

My people nonetheless

Or will my loved ones keep me home?

To decay along the soil that saw me flourish?

The forced stability that I thought id never have

To be visited by the next generation

The ones that will see me grow old

The young ones I'll never meet

Descendants

My people nonetheless

When my body is put to rest

and my spirit is finally free from the shackles that hold me back

Where will it go?

Will I travel like my ancestors have?

Will I travel like my descendants will?

How 433 Investors Unlocked 400X Return Potential

Institutional investors back startups to unlock outsized returns. Regular investors have to wait. But not anymore. Thanks to regulatory updates, some companies are doing things differently.

Take Revolut. In 2016, 433 regular people invested an average of $2,730. Today? They got a 400X buyout offer from the company, as Revolut’s valuation increased 89,900% in the same timeframe.

Founded by a former Zillow exec, Pacaso’s co-ownership tech reshapes the $1.3T vacation home market. They’ve earned $110M+ in gross profit to date, including 41% YoY growth in 2024 alone. They even reserved the Nasdaq ticker PCSO.

The same institutional investors behind Uber, Venmo, and eBay backed Pacaso. And you can join them. But not for long. Pacaso’s investment opportunity ends September 18.

Paid advertisement for Pacaso’s Regulation A offering. Read the offering circular at invest.pacaso.com. Reserving a ticker symbol is not a guarantee that the company will go public. Listing on the NASDAQ is subject to approvals.
