Migrants Scared to Ask for Help

We need to talk about one of the biggest concerns that came out of the past few years: fear vs. safety.

When news about raids was dominating headlines, advocates warned us about one critical outcome: that it would make an already vulnerable group, migrants in our community, afraid to call for help when they needed it most. We're now seeing that fear play out, and it's heartbreaking.

I recently saw a video that was a raw reminder of what’s happening in the shadows, things that often remain undocumented. In this video, a migrant was robbed and assaulted. Sadly, he didn't call the police. His biggest fear wasn't the assault; it was the deportation risk he felt by contacting authorities.

This fear creates a terrifying cycle. When people are too afraid to report crimes:

  • Criminals are emboldened. They know they can target vulnerable groups with near impunity.

  • The community is at risk. We’ve even seen reports of people pretending to be ICE to commit robberies and other bad things.

This is a direct and awful consequence of how the administration is treating immigration. It doesn't just impact legal status; it impacts basic human safety.

I’m so glad that she saw his humanity first #chicago #inmigración #inmigrantes #police #latino

Sharks, Shame, and the Fight for Community

In case you all didn't see it, a hateful message promoting ICE was posted on the jumbotron during the last San Jose Sharks game; specifically during Hispanic Heritage Night, or "Los Tiburones Night."

The message read: “SJ SHARKS FANS/LOVE ICE !!/GET 'EM BOYZ !”

That phrase→ "Get 'em Boyz" is a clear nod to the language white supremacists use to support raids. To have that shown, on that night, is not just a mistake; it's a deep, painful betrayal of our community and the values the team claims to stand for.

We know the message was paid for by an external party, not the Sharks organization itself, but the lack of screening is shameful.

As you all know, I’m a fan who has been with the team for a decade and a season ticket holder. This issue is personal to me. I immediately got in touch with my representative and spoke directly with one of the Senior VPs. I stressed that the focus shouldn't be on canceling one person, but on repairing the immense harm this caused to the Latino and migrant community.

They promised a follow-up, and I will be holding them accountable.

My goal is simple: Transparency, and a commitment from the Sharks organization to actively support the community that message targeted.

Once I have a substantive update on their plan of action, I will share it here. This isn't just about hockey; it's about making sure our institutions stand with the most vulnerable among us.

@senor_barragan

@San Jose Sharks how will you all repair the harm? #sanjose #nhl #sanjosesharks #bayarea #hispanic

How Different Leaders Use the National Guard

The National Guard has been called up by leaders for many reasons, but the contrast we’re seeing right now tells you everything about their priorities.

On one side, we have President Trump using the federalized National Guard to terrorize communities in cities like Chicago, L.A., and Portland. This is anti-human, and a horrible waste of resources that serves one goal: intimidation and political theater against blue cities. His administration is using armed troops in an attempt to crack down on everyday life, treating our neighbors as if they are the enemy.

On the flip side, we have Governor Newsom deploying the California National Guard to support food banks across the state. Why? Because the government shutdown is threatening to delay food benefits for 5.5 million Californians. Newsom is using the Guard to organize logistics and distribute essential food.

This isn't a policy debate; it’s a clear test of character. One leader uses military power to spread fear and create chaos. The other uses the same power for service and to make sure families don't go hungry.

The choice between intimidation and compassion couldn't be more obvious.

I heard this story directly from one of my old students who is in the national guard btw #nationalguard #newsom #california

Personal Update:

If you live in the Bay Area- please stay safe. I know the current administration has gone back and forth with how hard they are going to come down on SF. We already started seeing more ICE sightings around the Area. Please remember your rights and who you can call in case of emergencies. You can find that info in the video below as well! Share widely!
