Justice for Maria Florinda Rio Perez
This story is heartbreaking. Maria Florinda Rio Perez, a 34-year-old mother of four, was working as a cleaning lady and went to the wrong house for a job. She did not even get to put the key in the door before she was killed by the homeowner.
The claim of "home-invasion" is countered by the lack of communication and the fact she had not yet opened the door. The assumption that Maria posed a threat is directly on par with the dangerous propaganda being spread about immigrants in this country. Claiming that brown bodies are dangerous and using our community as scapegoats has real, fatal consequences, and we see it clearly here.
Maria was there to do a job, and now her family is forced to live without her. Justice for Maria Florinda Rio Perez, and let’s make sure we hold the perpetrators accountable.

AI Videos Are Pushing False Narratives
We are now fighting a new front in the disinformation war: AI-generated videos that look real and spread malice.
A prime example is the viral video of a woman supposedly robbing a Walmart, claiming her food stamps ran out. She appeared to walk out with two full carts of stolen items. The video was entirely fabricated by AI. Though many noticed the glitches, like poor sound quality, blurry text on products, and watermarks, the video was hella effective. It was reposted millions of times across the country and used as "evidence" to argue against social welfare programs like food stamps.
This is a crisis of media literacy. We are seeing more and more AI videos that some of us can spot, but which older generations or less tech-savvy family members often believe are real. Another video, for instance, showed protestors supposedly chanting about being paid overtime to protest; a false narrative designed to undermine the sincerity of activism.
As content creators, and more broadly, as people who engage with the internet, we must understand this technology will only continue to improve.
Please do the following:
STOP THE SPREAD: We must commit to not spreading information we haven't verified. Always research the source before clicking 'share' to ensure you are not backing up false claims.
CHECK YOUR SOURCES: Look for confirmation from multiple, established news organizations or fact-checking sites.
CHECK ON TU FAMILIA: It is equally important to talk to family and friends who may engage with this content. Check in, gently warn them about the misinformation, and help them understand the tell-tale signs of an AI video (unnatural movements, strange hands, or perfect facial features that look "too smooth").
We cannot let AI propaganda succeed in turning our community against itself or against others who rely on social safety nets.

Prop 50 Passes, But The Fight for Accountability Continues
On Tuesday, Prop 50 passed with a majority of Californians voting YES to temporarily redraw our congressional districts. This measure was a direct and necessary response to the partisan gerrymandering orchestrated in states like Texas; a critical step to defend against Republican efforts to rig the national map and maintain influence.
I recognize this as an important strategic win, but by no means does the work stop here. We must continue to hold Democratic leadership accountable by making sure their words are matching their actions.
Governor Newsom has been a vocal champion of Prop 50, assuring immigrants and other working-class people that he is fighting for them. Now, it’s time to see that energy translated into sustained and tangible support for nuestra comunidad.
We need to see him continue to prioritize creating and funding physical programs that protect and assist vulnerable communities within California, such as:
Expanding economic pathways for immigrant entrepreneurs and workers.
Strengthening safety standards and support for those impacted by immigration enforcement.
Investing in resources that directly address the high cost of living for working families.
The fight against gerrymandering is won for now, but the battle for dignity, protection, and opportunity for every person in California is daily. We must keep up the pressure.

Personal Update:
I had been boycotting the Sharks games (where I am a season ticket holder) until I was able to meet with the Sharks team to talk about the repair they have been doing in response to the jumbotron message. If you all don’t remember- a message was displayed publicly on Hispanic Heritage night that said that SJ Sharks fans loved ICE. with the message “Go Get em Boyz”. It was truly heartbreaking and targeted; specifically on that night.
I felt that the meeting was productive and team assured me they are recommitting their efforts to the Sharks education fund and donating proceeds from the jumbotron to the Hispanic Heritage Fund. They also said that the person who let this message through to be displayed publicly, has been held accountable and is no longer working in this division.
We have seen corporations lately bend the knee to the Trump admin and while this should have never occurred, it was refreshing to see a corporation actually trying to repair harm. I feel more comfortable returning to the games and am interested to see what other steps they take to show our community that they are fighting against fascism.
