Below are some of the stories we talked about this week

May Day March in San Francisco Mark your calendars for May 1st, because San Francisco will once again be the vibrant stage for a powerful May Day March. This year, the collective call will feature demands for a clear pathway to citizenship, an end to the pain of deportations, the crucial protection and defense of our sanctuary spaces, and a steadfast commitment to defending the fundamental rights of workers, including fair wages and housing for all. Join the community as we march together for justice and dignity. |

White House “fixes” headline on Kilmar The White House's forceful reaction to the New York Times headline regarding Kilmar Abrego Garcia raises serious concerns about overreach and a disregard for journalistic integrity. By repeatedly labeling him an MS-13 member without public evidence, and seemingly preempting due process with pronouncements of his permanent expulsion from the US, the administration exhibits a disturbing tendency towards authoritarian tactics. This pattern of behavior, where dissent is met with aggressive counter-narratives and legal norms are seemingly sidelined, paints a picture of an executive branch that increasingly resembles a dictatorship, rather than a democratic institution. |

19 Year Old US Citizen Detain by Immigration
The recent case out of Arizona, where a 19-year-old U.S. citizen was reportedly arrested by immigration authorities and unjustly detained for ten days simply for not having his documents on him, sends a truly scary message. The idea that individuals could be picked up and held without a warrant under such circumstances is deeply concerning and defies fundamental rights. People should not have to carry proof of citizenship at all times within their own country.
On a recent update we learned that the person arrested has learning disabilities and he approached an officer for help following a medical episode. Despite his claims of citizenship, he was arrested and accused of being in the US illegally. Hermosillo, unable to read, was allegedly coerced into signing a document admitting illegal entry, a claim disputed by his girlfriend who cites his learning disabilities. Held in harsh conditions, denied medication, and ultimately released only after his family proved his citizenship, These events raise serious concerns about due process, potential racial profiling, and the treatment of vulnerable individuals by immigration authorities.
This incident shows the urgent need for accountability and a serious reevaluation of the practices being employed, ensuring that the rights and freedoms of all people are protected from such overreach.

Judge Arrested for Helping Migrant The recent arrest of a judge for allegedly assisting a migrant is a deeply troubling development. Reports suggest she guided him towards a non-public exit and directed ICE agents elsewhere, actions that have led to obstruction charges and the potential for a five-year prison sentence. This heavy-handed response is particularly alarming as it appears to be an attempt to set a chilling precedent, discouraging others from offering humanitarian aid to migrants. The idea that someone could face such severe penalties for what could be interpreted as an act of compassion raises serious questions about due process and the ethical implications of prosecuting individuals for extending help. It underscores the urgent need to ensure fairness and proportionality within our legal system, especially when dealing with sensitive issues involving human lives. |

Ice Arrests 12 Day Laborers in Pomona, CA
La migra detained more than 12 day laborers in a Home Depot parking lot in Pomona who were looking for work. One worker, Carlos, became emotional describing the scene and stated “We are only here to support ourselves and maintain our families.” This raid has led to backlash from many community members and immigrant rights groups who say that the goal of these raids is to intimidate people who are only looking to make a living. Jessica Bansal of the National Day Laborer Organizing network shared that "If you are detained, you can exercise your rights….You can refuse to answer questions, and you can ask to speak to an attorney." Currently there is little information available around those immigrants detained and the reasoning behind their detainment. The Pomona Police Department released a statement saying they had no prior knowledge that the detainments would take place and that they did not collaborate with the operation.
