The Scary Truth About ICE’s "Fast-Tracked" Training

The Senate recently questioned Todd Lyons, the acting director of ICE, in a committee hearing that should have everyone on high alert. During the testimony, Lyons confirmed a terrifying shift in how the agency prepares its officers: training requirements are being slashed from 75 calendar days down to just 42.

To make up for the lost weeks, they are simply packing four extra hours into each remaining day. But as we know, "more hours" doesn't equal "better prepared."

The most devastating takeaway? Lyons reiterated that a new ICE recruit, someone who has never handled a weapon in their life, can be out on patrol in just 40 days. In less than six weeks, a person with zero prior experience is authorized to carry a firearm and potentially kill someone in our communities.

Despite the growing list of killings by ICE across the country, Lyons stood firm in defending his officers. He also made it clear: ICE will continue to be the primary engine for Trump’s mass deportation plans.

We cannot stay silent while our neighbors are hunted by an agency that prioritizes speed over safety and enforcement over human life. We need elected officials who will stand up to these inhumane systems and work to dismantle them immediately… not just offer "thoughts and prayers" after the next tragedy.

Don’t Open the Door: Know Your Rights in Action

We talk about "Knowing Your Rights" all the time, but seeing it in action is a powerful reminder of why that knowledge is our best defense.

In a recent video that’s been viral, we see a woman standing her ground against ICE agents attempting an illegal raid on her home. The officers tried every intimidation tactic in the book to get her to open that door, but she stayed calm and stayed inside.

When the agents claimed they had an "order" for her son’s deportation, she didn't panic. Instead, she asked the most important question you can ask: "Do you have a warrant signed by a judge?"

The agents had to admit the truth: they did not. They only had an administrative order (which is just a piece of paper from ICE, not a court order that gives them the right to enter your home). Because she knew the difference, she refused to come out, stated her rights clearly, and demanded to have a lawyer present.

ICE often counts on three things to conduct these raids:

  1. Fear: Hoping the shock of the moment makes you compliant.

  2. Confusion: Using "official-sounding" documents that aren't actually legal warrants.

  3. Silence: Hoping you don't know you have the right to a lawyer.

Never open your door unless they slide a warrant signed by a judge under the door or show it through a window. An administrative warrant is NOT enough to enter your home without your consent.

You do not have to answer any questions about where you were born, your immigration status, or how you entered the country. "I want a lawyer": Say this and nothing else.

This woman’s courage is the blueprint. By refusing to be overwhelmed, she protected her family and her home.

The Super Bowl, Redacted Files, and the Art of Distraction

While most of the country was locked into the spectacle of the Super Bowl, a specific 30 seconds of airtime cut through the usual noise of beer ads and celebrity cameos. A commercial produced by survivors of Jeffrey Epstein delivered a message directly to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi: it is time to release the truth.

“After years of being kept apart, we’re standing together,” one survivor stated in the ad, as a graphic flashed across the screen revealing a staggering statistic…three million files related to the late sex trafficker remain unreleased, hidden behind heavy black redactions. These files reportedly contain mentions of some of the most powerful figures in the world, including Donald Trump, Bill Gates, Bill Clinton, and Stephen Hawking. The message was clear: the public deserves to know the full extent of this network, and survivors deserve transparency.

The placement of this ad had an impact. It was sandwiched between high-budget commercials pushing weight-loss drugs and the latest AI surveillance technology. The contrast was impossible to ignore, on one hand, we are being sold tools for self-improvement and "safety," while on the other, survivors are begging for the basic accountability of predators who operated in plain sight for decades.

This is the distraction at work. The most powerful people in this country often rely on a constant stream of consumerism and "new tech" to keep us from looking too closely at the files they’ve redacted or the systems that protected them. I stand firmly with the survivors in their demand for justice. We cannot allow the glitter of a halftime show or the convenience of new gadgets to blind us to the fact that accountability is still being denied. We must continue to demand a world where no one is "too powerful" to face the consequences of their actions.

Personal Update:

This week, I was blessed with the opportunity to join an event in Oakland with Mayor Barbara Lee. As someone who lives here in the Bay Area, I’ve been closely following and sharing the city’s efforts to protect our immigrant communities, so being in that space felt especially meaningful.

Below, you can see a small clip of me asking her directly about her message to the immigrant community right now. I have to say, I really appreciate her energy→ she is dope and truly seems to understand the weight of the moment we are in.

Thank you, as always, for supporting this journey and allowing me to take up space in these rooms. Whether I’m questioning officials in Oakland or breaking down policy for you all here, I don't take this platform for granted.

ALSO I haven’t shared this with anyone yet but I am gonna start a podcast. Algo leve to help us have the conversations we need. Please be on the look out for it !
