Below are some of the stories we talked about this week

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! This week was Teacher Appreciation Week, and I was happy to celebrate my teachers at school who dedicate countless hours and give their all to ensure our students are supported and motivated. As a reminder, the teaching profession continues to be undervalued and underappreciated. With Donald Trump’s recent proposals to significantly cut funding for the Department of Education, which would impact critical services like special education and school lunch programs for the most vulnerable populations, it is more important than ever to demand higher wages and more support for teachers. Our future generations deserve the best, and this can only come from making sure the profession is sustainable through dedicating more resources to students, families, and school communities. |

Sr. Barragan on a Mural in NY??? A few months ago, a muralist and professor contacted me about a project focused on the experiences of child migrants. I was excited to be a part of it and sent them some photos as well as my story. They've now included my pictures in a mural that's up in New York City! They also plan on putting a mural up in Fresno. For now if you’re in NY please check it out y mandenme fotos si lo miran. |

College Student Detained By ICE Ximena Arias-Cristobal, a 19 year old college honor student, was detained by ICE in Georgia due to an improper right turn without signaling. She was pulled over by the police and upon discovering that she did not have proper documents, she was arrested and taken to an ICE facility. Donald Trump has stated that his plan for deportations would focus on those with serious criminal records but this is yet another case of an immigrant being detained for nonviolent crimes and minor violations. Ximena entered the United States when she was 4 years old and has lived here ever since. The CoreCivic operated-center where Ximena is currently being held, has previously been condemned for poor conditions and 10 people have passed away in these facilities since 2017. Ximena did not qualify for DACA due to the hardships the program has faced in attempts to dismantle it during the 1st Trump administration, so there has been no pathway for her to seek legal documentation in this country. |

Bigotry Becoming Normalized? A clip recently made the rounds online, featuring a conservative commentator who seemed almost proud to declare their casual use of hate speech. The smug expression on their face, coupled with this apparent "bravery," really highlights a disturbing direction that some are actively trying to steer our country towards. We've seen similar sentiments echoed in the push to dehumanize people by insisting on terms like "illegals." While often masked as a fight for free speech, the underlying current feels much more like a desperate clinging to outdated notions of superiority. It's frankly a disgusting display. |

Racist Who Called a Child the N-Word Gets Support 😠
Shiloh Hendrix went viral recently for repeatedly calling a Black child the n-word on a playground. Furthermore, a GoFundMe raised over half a million dollars in support of Shiloh by donors who saw her as a “hero” against the “woke left” and see her as a champion of free speech. Meanwhile the GoFundMe set up for the child’s family received $340,000 before it closed last Saturday. While many supporters of Shiloh state that cancel culture is the problem and this woman does not deserve to receive death threats, there need to be consequences and ways to hold people like this accountable for racist behavior. Comments on the GoFundMe for Shiloh continued to use racist language against the child, so much so that the comments needed to be disabled. On an interview with Piers Morgan, the woman continued to defend her comments and stated that she uses the n-word repeatedly.

A little personal update:
My time as a high school principal is coming to an end 🫠 Y estoy buscando chamba 😆 if you all know folks that need an educational leader in their company→ let me know.
Para ser honesto, me gusta el trabajo that I do on social media pero its not very reliable when it comes to making an income. So for the foreseeable future I am going to continue to do both. I am not sure what kind of gig I will do in the future but you all have been a part of the journey so I will keep you in the loop.
It’s kinda scary pero seguimos pa’ delante. Gracias for your support ☺️
@senor_barragan Teacher Barragan again? O que hago?? 😭 #SeñorB #DACA #dreamer #principal #bayarea
